Guitarist Gary Prince is Jazz Program Chair and Contemporary Guitar Faculty at Levine Music, a community music school located in Washington, DC. Gary holds degrees in Jazz & Contemplative Studies and Psychology from the University of Michigan (2008), where he was a member of the Creative Arts Orchestra under the direction of Ed Sarath and Mark Kirschenmann. Starting Summer 2016, Gary will enroll in the MM in Music Education summer program at the University of Michigan, class of 2019.
As Jazz Program Chair at Levine Music, Gary is responsible for designing classes and curriculum, planning events, hiring and evaluating faculty, and partnering with local and national arts organizations; performing, teaching ensembles, private students, and group classes to students of all instruments, ages, and abilities, at four locations serving the DC metro area. Under his direction, the Jazz Program at Levine Music has more than tripled in size since April 2013, when he became Chair. In addition to Levine Music, where he has been on faculty since Fall 2008, Gary has held teaching positions at The Siena School, The Sheridan School, The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, and is a former Artist-in-Bloom Resident Fellow at BloomBars in Washington, DC.
An active performer with a wide range of influences, Gary can be heard playing in styles ranging from jazz to blues, tango, old time, rock, and modern experimentalism. Since 2009, he has self-released albums of improvised music with various ensembles, including Improvised Duets (2009), Missing the End All (2013), Time & Place (2013), and Scene From a Wall in the Memory (2014). Gary performed at the 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2012 ISIM Conferences. In addition to his work as a leader, Gary has appeared regularly as a sideman on albums by artists including Carolyn Malachi, Tom Goss, Sarah Fridrich, and Sarah Gilberg.
