Jin Hi Kim is New Haven Symphony Orchestra Music Alive Composer-in-Residence and a recipient of 2010 Guggenheim Fellowship for Music Composition. Kim is an innovative virtuoso of the komungo (Korean fretted-board zither), who has introduced the indigenous instrument into Western contemporary music in a wide array of compositions over 25 years, and has devoted her life to introducing Korean music outside of Korea. She co-designed the world’s only electric komungo.

Kim performed as a komungo soloist in her own compositions/improvisations at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Smithsonian Freer Gallery of Art, Asia Society (New York), Royal Festival Hall (London), Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin), Expo Zaragoza (Spain), Vancouver International Jazz & Blues Festival (Canada), and many prestigious festivals and stages around the world.

She has improvised with many prominent figures in new music and avant-garde jazz including Henry Kaiser, Elliott Sharp, Derek Bailey, Oliver Lake, William Parker, Joelle Leandre, Hans Reichel, Rudiger Carl, Bill Frisell, Evan Parker, James Newton, Eugene Chadbourne, Min Xiao-Fen, Shonosuke Okura, David Toop, Kongar-Ol Ondar, Mor Thiam, Billy Bang, Peter Kowald, Jane Ira Bloom, Terry Genoure, Miya Masaoka, Akikazu Nakamura, Leroy Jenkins, Fredy Studer, Vikku Vinayakram, Samir Chaterjee and Gerry Hemingway.
