Kari Musil has been a Band and Orchestra teacher with the Saint Paul Public Schools in St. Paul, Minnesota for the past 12 years. She studied saxophone at Moorhead State University, theory/composition and jazz studies at the University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities, and completed a M.M. in Music Education at the University of Minnesota at Duluth.

Before becoming a public school music teacher she worked as a freelance musician and composer in Minnesota and Wisconsin. She was a member of the improvisational ensemble, IMP ORK, performing and collaborating with Julius Hemphill, Douglas Ewart and Faye Washington. She has collaborated over the years with poet, J. Otis Powell as a composer and saxophonist. She regularly performs with and composes for the NOVA Contemporary Jazz Orchestra (www.novajazz.net). Most recently she has been composing music for her middle school and high school band students that incorporates improvisation and invites collaboration with community musicians.
